We believe that every student with passion, talent, and drive deserves the opportunity to transform their untapped creativity into a promising career. Youth Design addresses the critical socioeconomic needs of urban youth by teaching them marketable design skills, connecting them with motivated professional mentors, and supporting them along the path toward higher education.

Youth Design supports the next generation of diverse young designers by:

• Mentorships with world class designers
• Creating critically needed paid summer jobs
• School-year workshops, focused on design and life skills
• Access to professional networks
• Whole-life learning

AIGA Design Salaries 2012

AIGA Design Salaries 2012

I’m Archer Hairline. To what extent could this data be used to “improve” an author’s writing, say if 60% of readers stopped reading after the second chapter? This has implications for the creative process as well as how publishers sell books.

Could writers in the future be subjected to their publishers’ marketing agendas? The availability of readers’ data begs the question: should writers give people what they “want” or continue to exercise their freedom of speech and creativity in the hope that people will discover something new that they want or like just as much, if not more?

The Classics—Crime and Punishment, Wurthering Heights, Moby Dick, etc.—are not the easiest books to get through, yet are heralded by our time as being the paragon of good literature. Can e-reader data provide an accurate picture of readers’ sensibilities? Tread carefully, publishers; there is much more to the story than just selling books. What will become of timeless literature if we cater only to the immediate wants and desires of the population?

There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.
– Oscar Wilde

Typographic Maps

Typographic Maps:
WANT.

BACON TYPOGRAPHY

BACON TYPOGRAPHY:
Clearly awesome.

Form Follows Function

Form Follows Function:
HTML5 experiences for your viewing pleasure. Fairly neat, I have to say. It borrows some UX patterns and visual design styles from the Windows 8 system (since it’s the trendy thing to do now apparently). However, they need to watch the line lengths on the wall posts (TOO LONG!). And this rendition strongly resembles the new MySpace design posted 3 months earlier. I’d like to see some user research before endorsing any sort of social media redesign.
